Meet picture book author Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and special guest Dr. Leona Tate for a book talk & signing, plus light breakfast. Families will receive their own copy of Small Shoes, Great Strides.*
Registration for Books & Breakfast is recommended to help us plan supplies.
Vaunda Micheaux Nelson will speak about her children's book that recounts the experience of McDonogh three, Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost, as they desegregated McDonogh 19 Elementary School on November 14, 1960. Nelson will be joined by Dr. Leona Tate, one of the three who led this historical event as a six-year old child, and who has since created the Tate Etienne Prevost (TEP) Interpretive Center at the old McDonogh 19.
Nelson and Tate's visit celebrates the culmination of our fourth NOLA Readers 2.0, a collaboration between the New Orleans Public Library and the Louisiana Children's Museum. NOLA Readers 2.0 provided a literacy experience around one book, Small Shoes, Great Strides: How Three Brave Girls Opened Doors for School Equality, for second grade students in New Orleans, through field trips to the Louisiana Children's Museum and the Main Library.
*Free copies at the event are for families outside of NOLA Readers 2.0, who have yet to receive a copy of Small Shoes, Great Strides, while supplies last.
