One Book One New Orleans and former Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin lead a talk and writing workshop inspired by the collection "You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World" edited by Ada Limon.
Reflect on and write about the Louisiana landscape in all its forms.
One Book One New Orleans and Alison Pelegrin, former Louisiana Poet Laureate and creator of the Lifelines Poetry Project, have created programming inspired by the collection You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World, edited by Ada Limon. Their program has taken place both in public settings and inside prisons throughout Louisiana. This book invites readers to think about place and landscape in innovative ways.
Pelegrin and contributor to You Are Here Khadijah Queen will share their experience bringing this book to incarcerated readers, followed by a public writing workshop that replicates the work being done inside prisons. The event culminates in a community reading of pieces generated in this workshop, pieces by incarcerated writers in response to You Are Here, and reflections on the themes of landscape and place written in response to an open call. All pieces will be collected into a digital archive that will be available free of charge to the public. Writers are especially encouraged to consider the various landscapes of Louisiana in the context of the United States' 250th anniversary.
The first 40 people in attendance will receive a free copy of You Are Here.
Refreshments will be provided. This event is free, family-friendly, and all are welcome.
