Creative Mending
Hand Sewing to Highlight Repairs with Lexy Ho-Tai
Thursday, July 02
4:30pm - 6:30pm
Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center
Meeting RoomBring an item you'd like to repair, and learn various visible hand-mending techniques to fix rips, stains, or holes using patches. Adults at all skill levels welcome. Registration recommended.
Creative, or visible, mending is the magical practice of highlighting repairs rather than hiding them. In this workshop, reimagine treasured textiles, embrace play and experimentation, and ground in the slow, care-based craft of hand-sewing.
This is an introductory class geared toward adults. No sewing experience is necessary, and imperfection and experimentation are encouraged. The intention is to create a cozy space, moving at a human pace. Mending is an empowering, mindful, and joyful life-long skill.
What to bring: A textile item (clothing, blanket, bag, etc) that you would like to creatively repair. Anything with rips, holes, stains, etc. Feel free to bring a few options, if you'd like. If you don't have a mending pile, you can also bring in any garment you may want to add some pizzazz to.
Optional to bring:
- Pen and paper for taking notes.
- Fabric for patches. Materials will be provided, but you're invited to bring in any extra fabrics to incorporate with your mending or to share with the group, such as fabric scraps, old rags, lonely socks, etc. that you have lying around. This could be a great space to find them a home.
- If you have your own basic sewing items (fabric scissors, needles, pins), feel free to bring them.
- Headphones if you want to tune into your own world while we slow stitch.
