Black Family Portraits and Storytelling Sessions

This Black History Month, The REACH Center invites you to be part of a powerful celebration of Black family and community through our Family Portrait and Storytelling Series. This project honors the beauty, resilience, and diversity of Black families in New Orleans while centering the importance of communal storytelling.

We're offering 6 free portrait sessions paired with oral history interviews that capture not just your image, but your family's unique story, legacy, and definition of what family means to you.

What is family? 

You decide. Whether you're a multi-generational household, chosen family, queer family, migrant family, single parent and child, grandparents raising grandchildren, or any other configuration—your family's story deserves to be celebrated and preserved.

Each session includes:

• Family Portrait: 2 - 4 images
• Oral history interview exploring your family's journey, traditions, and what binds you together
• A lasting contribution to our community archive of Black family narratives

This year, The REACH Center is focusing on the importance of communal storytelling, and this family portrait series kicks off that vital work. Your participation helps weave the rich tapestry of Black life and family in New Orleans.
