Learn about property taxes in Louisiana—including how tax bills are calculated and how rates are set—via BGR's powerful public data dashboard.
Property taxes are a basic means of financing local government, but the public faces a confusing array of tax rates, taxing bodies, and dedicated purposes across the New Orleans region. To help explain these taxes, the Bureau of Governmental Research (BGR) launched an interactive online tool in 2024. In this presentation, BGR’s research team, Susie Dudis, Stephen Stuart, and CEO Rebecca Mowbray, will explore the dashboards and how to get the most out of using them. BGR will also discuss its accompanying online guide to property taxes in Louisiana, which explains how tax bills are calculated and how rates are set. You'll leave with a better understanding of this complex system of taxation and how the individual taxes you vote on fit into the bigger picture of property tax funding for local government. Find out more at the City Archives Program Webpage for the event when it goes live in September.
This program will be held at East New Orleans Library on October 12th and repeated at Norman Mayer Library on October 26th. Both events can also be viewed over Zoom via the blue "Register" button on their respective listings.
